It all started at my dental appointment. What should of been a routine check up turned into something else. This is when my dentist noticed white lesions on the back of my tongue. Then I told her about a pea size lump on my right side of my neck. She reply's, my husband just happens to be a head and neck surgent. Would you mind if I took a picture so I can show my husband? 25 minutes later she walks back into the room and says quietly, I don't want to scare you but after this visit you must leave this office and go directly to your primary doctor and ask for a Biopsy. That's what I did only to find out that I had my 1st cancer diagnosis. Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the right tonsil with metastasis to the right lymph node, a type of head and neck cancer, on July 8th 2019 two days after my 50th birthday. I had a radical tonsillectomy and right neck dissection. Tuma size was 3 cm with a lymphovascular invasion on A5 and A6 to be 4.4 cm. It was a PHD from Harvard who used a Transoral Robotic Surgery (TORS). No Chemo or RAD was necessary. I was told I was cured of the cancer. The surgery was a success but being that it was metastasis complitates recurrence and survival rates. Take any information with caution especially the though that you will live longer with no complications. You see less than 2 years later I somehow got a recurrence of the same metastasis cancer that I was cured from. (*note the word cured) I love my oncology team but the oncologist, radiologist doctor and Chemo doctors will always be hopeful and misinform you to think you got this with a low chance of any complications late down the road. This is a proven technique that actually helps cancer patients live longer and better to fight the cancer they got. No one wants to hear doom and gloom as this technique has proven to fail. Their jobs are to keep you alive as long as possible. So yes you could be getting what I call "sugar coating" but its for you own good. Ask a specific question like did. I asked has anyone with the same diagnosis as me that you have treated has lived over 10 years. NO answer however as I slowly navigated through the staff some were more open to what I could expect based on past patients.
